About Mesa Sister Cities
What is Mesa Sister Cities?
The Sister City movement became a national effort when resident Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed the People-to-People program at a White House Conference in 1956. Today, over 2,500 U.S. cities in all 50 states are linked with cities in 134 countries. For more than half a century, the Sister Cities program has broadened its areas of focus from education and cultural exchanges to include technical assistance, trade and economic development.
Mesa joined the Sister City movement in 1981 with the creation of Mesa Sister Cities Association. As a non-profit 501c(3) organization, MSCA signed their first Sister City charter with Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico in 1981. Since then, Mesa has linked with four other cities. These invaluable partnerships offer a forum for fostering mutual understanding, friendship and peace through cultural, social, educational and economic exchanges between the people of Mesa and those of our Sister Cities.
